The $99 Fitbit Air uses the same heart-rate sensor as the Fitbit Charge 5, Charge 6 and Inspire 3 — hardware that’s several years old. So can a screenless $99 band really track your heart and sleep as well as devices costing three times more? A detailed lab-referenced test by The Quantified Scientist put it through its paces, and the answer is a genuine surprise.

    Heart-rate accuracy: better than the price suggests

    Tested against a Polar H10 ECG chest strap across different exercises, the Fitbit Air was excellent for steady cardio and only wobbled where every wrist tracker does — outdoor cycling and lifting:

    The average across cardio exercises works out to a heart-rate score of 97/100 (“great”) — remarkable for a years-old sensor. It sits comfortably among mid-to-high performers, just behind Apple and Pixel watches.

    Sleep tracking: a top-5 brand at a budget price

    Against an EEG headband reference, the Fitbit Air agreed closely on every sleep stage — matching the much pricier Pixel Watch 4 almost exactly:

    That puts it in the same top tier as Apple Watch, Whoop, Oura and the Eight Sleep Pod for sleep-stage tracking — and it’s the cheapest of them by a wide margin. One caveat: sleep stages are computed in the cloud, so it needs an internet connection.

    The headline is cost: $99 one-time vs $199/year. Whoop earns its place for serious amateur athletes who prefer its app and want double the battery, but for most people the Fitbit Air is the smarter buy.

    What to know before buying

    A few real limitations keep it honest: it’s not a smartwatch (no call/text notifications, only alarms and low-battery buzzes); heart-rate broadcasting works over Bluetooth but not with Garmin or Technogym; and at launch, syncing with Apple Health and Strava is largely one-directional (it imports, but doesn’t fully export). Steps ran about 1% high in testing — negligible.
