    Three things worth knowing before you buy

    1. Algorithms beat sensors

    The single most striking result in this testing: the $99 Fitbit Air uses the same sensor as Fitbit trackers from years earlier, yet scores 97/100 for heart rate and joins the top five brands for sleep tracking. Newer, more expensive hardware regularly loses to better software.

    2. Every wrist device fails in the same two places

    Weightlifting and outdoor cycling break optical heart-rate sensors — wrist tension and grip disrupt the blood-flow signal. This is near-universal, from budget bands to flagships. If you need accurate heart rate for lifting, use a chest strap or an upper-arm band.

    3. Check the metric, not the brand

    Huawei devices track heart rate respectably and sleep stages poorly. Apple leads for exercise heart rate but was the most inconsistent for VO2 Max in early testing. There is no brand that wins everything — decide which number you actually use, then buy for that.
