Smartwatch Feature Trends 2026: What 36 Popular Models Reveal

Last updated: August 2, 2026 · Based on manufacturer specifications, independent expert reviews and verified user feedback — see our Research Process.

To cut through the marketing, we compiled the official manufacturer specifications for 36 of the most popular smartwatches on sale in 2026 — across 14 brands and 11 operating systems — and analysed which features have become standard, which are still premium-only, and where the biggest trade-offs lie. Here is what the data shows.

Key findings
  • Blood-oxygen and GPS are now table stakes: 94% of watches include SpO₂ and 92% have built-in GPS.
  • ECG has gone mainstream — and cheap: 56% of models offer an ECG, including 43% of budget watches (under ~$150).
  • Skin-temperature sensing is the real divider: only 50% include it — the least common of the mainstream health sensors.
  • LTE is still a premium niche: just 22% offer standalone cellular.
  • The battery gap is stark: 88% of dedicated fitness-focused platforms (Garmin, Polar, COROS, Amazfit…) last a week or more, versus just 0% of Apple watchOS and Wear OS models.

    Which features are now standard?

Across the 36 models, two sensors are effectively universal, while temperature sensing and cellular remain differentiators:

ECG is trickling down to budget watches

ECG used to be a flagship feature. Not anymore: while 83% of premium watches include it, so do 43% of budget models such as the Fitbit Charge 6, Samsung Galaxy Watch FE and Amazfit Active 2. Mid-range is actually the weakest tier for ECG.

The battery divide defines the market

The single clearest pattern in the data is battery life, and it splits cleanly by platform. Fitness-first systems (Garmin, Amazfit’s Zepp OS, Huawei, hybrid Withings) routinely run 1–4 weeks. The full-featured smartphone-style platforms — Apple watchOS and Wear OS — trade that away for brighter always-on displays and richer apps, landing at roughly a day.

    Average battery life by brand
Mean of stated battery life across each brand’s models in the sample (days)

Just 0% of the watchOS and Wear OS models in the sample last a week on a charge, versus 88% of the dedicated fitness-focused platforms (Garmin, Polar, COROS, Amazfit and similar). If multi-day battery matters to you, the operating system tells you almost everything before you even look at the price.
